Ummm... that like asking who was the president of the US but not giving a date range. It becomes even more complicated for Sparta though as they used a dual leader system (there were two Kings of Sparta ruling side by side). To better understand Spartan government you should read some books on the Peloponesian War as they generally break down the differences between Sparta and Athens.

You didn't learn anything fizzygurl. Shocking. Leonidas was in 300, not Troy. Menelaos was the king in Troy.

As for 'who was the king of Sparta,' there were hundreds throughout Spartan history. The legendary great Spartan 'king' (or lawgiver, it varies) was Lykourgos, who initiated the Spartan system of government. Menelaos, Tyndareus, and other Mycenaean Spartan kings are legendary, and in fact 'Sparta' did not exist as it did in the later Archaic and Classical periods. It was not the same city.

But yes, you're probably thinking of Leonidas in the movie.

Sparta was ruled by two hereditary kings of the Agiad and Eurypontids families, both descendants of Heracles and equal in authority, so that one could not act against the veto of his colleague, though the Agiad king received greater honour in virtue of the seniority of his family for being the oldest in existence (Herod. vi. 5).

There are several legendary explanations for this unusual dual kingship, which differ only slightly; for example, that King Aristodemus had twin sons, who agreed to share the kingship, and this became perpetual. Modern scholars have advanced various theories to account for the anomaly. Some theorize that this system was created in order to prevent absolutism, and is paralleled by the analogous instance of the dual consuls at Rome. Others believe that it points to a compromise arrived at to end the struggle between two families or communities.

Uh...Leonidas, right? In the movie he was married to Helen, and his brother was Agamemnon, the war leader guy, and then that dude played by Orlando Bloom stole Helen and took her to Troy and that's what started the war, right?

See how much I can learn when Brad Pitt's naked butt is involved???
