take the thestral drawn carriages to get to the train when they leave the school? If so, wouldn't Harry have been able to see the thestrals at the end of the Goblet of Fire (since he had seen Cedric die by then)?

He was too shocked about Cedric's death and hadn't accepted that it had happened yet.

I go along with the answer that Harry was probably not sent to the train the normal way. Since he was still getting over the effects of his battle with Voldemort, and the death of Cedric, it is more than likely that Dumbledore would have escorted Harry to the train or arranged for one of the teachers to do so. If so they may not have take the carriages to get there so he would have a bit more privacy.

Not so according to Rowling (on Harry being able to see the thestrals at the end of his fourth year). You need to first let the death sink in, and according to Rowling, Cedric's death took a little bit to fully sink in for Harry. She posted it in the FAQ section of her website, so you're not the only one to wonder about this.

Below is a link to the question on the text only version of her site.

You could come up with some theory about how it hadn't set in yet, or whatever, but you know the reality is that particular detail about the Thestrals had not been finalized yet. If you'd prefer, just assume it was raining, or foggy, or Harry was in a hurry and never really looked up from the ground in front of him.

By the end of his fourth year, Cedric's death hadn't really sunk in yet. He kept on thinking Cedric would some how come back and that he still alive. It took the summer for Harry to fully comprehend that Cedric really was dead and that there was no way he could come back.

Its possible he just didnt notice, being overtaken with grief and all.

Or, Maybe they dont take the thestral carriages? Or, perhaps, He didnt take it, maybe he was escorted privatly to discourage painful publicity over what happened?

Dumbledore would have taken it into account, IMHO...

He hadn't quite accepted Cedric's death by then.

I noticed that as well. I thought maybe Rowling didn't come up with it until she was writing OoTP.
