The American government spends too much on /everything/, it's just very wasteful.

For example, we could have just put out a $10,000 mob hit on everyone living in Iraq, for about a quarter the cost of the Iraq war, which, as you may know, has so far left the vast majority of Iraqis alive. Now, that's not really true, because the supply of mob assassins is very limitted, but I think it puts the inefficiency of the military opperations in Iraq in the propper perspective.

no we should spend more on police and the military and less on welfare and social programs. The only purpose of government is to protect the citizens and build roads

No. Our defence is the reason we have a government. The overwhelming amount of US spending is not defence, but Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and interest on the debt.

It doesn't matter anymore. Like Colin Powell warned Bush in regards to Iraq before the invasion: "If you break it, you've bought it."

Well, we've bought it and its going to continue to cost us plenty. And the cash is the least of it. I'm thinking about the lives lost more than anything else.
