Let's see - I started birth control when I was 20 or 21, and stopped when I was 25 and was almost immediately pregnant. Then I got back on again for about 1.5 yrs., stopped and then again was almost immediately pregnant. Talk to your gynecologist or pharmacist about this to get a scientific opinion, but honestly I don't think that the amount of time has that much effect. I think age is a bigger deal in ease of getting pregnant - you'll have an easier time getting pregnant, generally, in your 20s than your 30s, in your 30s than in your 40s, etc...

I have read that it's best to stop taking it 2-3 months before trying to conceive. But, I personally should have gone off mine earlier because I decided I wanted to start trying within weeks of going off the pill. Even though we had planned our TTC date to be 3 months after getting off of it I changed my mind. Maybe get off of it at like 6 months before you want to start trying and just use spermicide, a condom, or a sponge, or something else until you want to start trying. I read that spermicides are 80% effective in preventing pregnancy and have had no problem as I did not get pregnant using spermicide as directed. I used the Ortho Options that come in pre-filled applicators from Walgreens.

I have read birth control actually helps you get pregnant and makes you more fertile once you go off of it.

I definetely think you need to stay on the pill at 19 maybe think about it if you're still with this guy in another year. I'm 23 and we've been together since I was 16 - married since I was 18 and we're finally ready for a baby.

Here's some links I have found too..

Hope I helped, dear.

In the future you should try to get a hold of the morning after pill, which actually is available to you through your doctor or planned parenthood (I'm 16, too, but I was able to get it without parental permission). However, that's only effective within a few days of having unprotected sex, so that wouldn't be helpful to you right now. I guess all you can do right now is hope that you get your period, or pick up a pregnancy test like First Response that will tell you if you are pregnant before you miss your period. Good Luck.

There's no need to go off the Pill right away. Most doctors agree that the hormones which prevent ovulation are completely out of a woman's system within three months of stopping the Pill, so you should stop taking it right as you decide you're ready to concieve. I actually know a lot of women who got pregnant the first month they stopped the Pill.

Also, I'm not being judgmental, I just want to ask...are you sure you want to have kids so soon? You're 19. Like I said though, that is none of my business. I just was sort of shocked to see a 19-year-old in the TTC category.

I've never heard of birth control causing infertility after stopping them. It may just take longer than usual to conceive. I agree with the one year before trying. But who's to say, it could be a month or six. Some women even get pregnant while on birth control.

It depends on what kind of birth control you are on... if it's the pill, I would probably stop taking it about 6 Months in advance and if you are on Depo, I would stop taking it now and get on something else. Depo really messes with our system!! If you are on depo and don't want to switch I suggest stopping a year in advance.

Don't worry, people conceive all the time after taking birth control for years upon years.

I'm in the same boat as you. But im stopping mine for medical reasons. And I spook to my OBGYN about this and he said it did not matter how long you were on them for you still can concieve after you are off them. it just dependds on how your body is to long it would take to conceive a child. Just be safe when you come off if you do not want to end up pregnant right away. You are most fertile then. But good luck in the future.

I would say to stop taking the pill about a year in advance, sometimes it can take up to a year after sometimes not, and sometimes longer, so waiting til about a year before should be plenty of time.
