Ask anyone who has been to a game. Of course people catch baseballs with their bare hands. During a game you'll hear the crowd cheer or boo depending on whether a person caught a foul ball/home run. In fact, if you go to early batting practice you'll see a few people with swolen (and a few times broken) hands because they caught/attempted to catch one.

I went to a Braves game and the guy behind me caught an Albert Pujols home run (in BP), he couldn't close his hand for quite a while after that.

Oh and to abqmcse, the best catch I've seen at a baseball game is the man who caught a foul ball while holding his baby! I bet that man had to sleep on the couch for a month.

If its a screaming line-drive off of Albert Pujols bat, I recommend ducking for cover! Don't try to catch it bare-handed. Too painful!

However, if its a typical, soft fly ball into the center field stands, no problem.

The greatest catch ever by a fan has to be the nut that jumped out of the stands on Monday Night Football to catch the extra point conversion and fell about 25 feet to the ground below. He held on to the ball and sustained minor injuries. The next night, he was on the Letterman Show.

Its not baseball, but that was one unbelieveble catch!

It's possible, a home run is simply a ball that has left the field in fair territory.

When I was in exhbition stadium, a home run was hit that bounced off a glove and landed in my open hand. I caught a home run ball with my bare hand, but it's a bit different because I didn' t have the speed of catching it on it's descent only.

Why not?

In 1989, during a game in Philadelphia, Kevin Mitchell of the San Francisco Giants caught a sinking line drive in left field with his bare hand. He wasn't going to be able to reach across his body with his glove hand (his left). So, he stuck out his right hand and nabbed it from out of the air.

A GREAT play indeed... seeing that play puts a smile on my face EVERY time

Depending on who hits the ball, catching a HR with your bare hand might be a LOT easier than holding onto it afterward.

I have done this off of the bat of Brady Anderson formerly of the Baltimore Orioles. It stung a little, but was not bad and had no permanent damage. The worst part I think was that I knocked over a little kid to do it. But I was only 16 then so it wasn't too bad.
