on gas?

I think the image conservatives have of liberals is that they are all tree huggers and all this kind of stereotype.

They attack global warming and thats fine dude whatever.

Lets assume global warming is a big lie, and I'm not saying it is I'm just saying lets assume,

wouldn't you want to get a car that would give you the best fuel efficiency?

Forget al gore and all this stuff about carbon and mercury emmissions, wouldn't buying things that are more energy efficient be better cause then you'd have more money to buy things or donate money to the republican of your choice whose running for office.

Greed is good!

Wow there's a lot of misinformation about hybrids here.

1) Hybrids will pay for the initial cost in a few years:

"The consumer-focused automotive Web site said that, assuming vehicles were driven 15,000 miles per year and gas was priced at $3 per gallon, owners of the Toyota Prius and Ford Motor Co.'s Escape Hybrid would break even within three years.

Buyers of the Saturn Vue Green Line from General Motors Corp., the Toyota Camry and the Civic Hybrid from Honda Motor Co. would break-even within six years, Edmunds.com said."

http://www.cnn.com/2006/AUTOS/08/22/bc.autos.hybrids.reut/index.html

Plus if you have a 5 year loan to pay off the car, your monthly gas savings will offset the higher monthly payment, so it will be the same cost as a regular car for 3-6 years, and after that you're saving money!

2) The initial energy required to build a car is only 10% of the lifetime energy the car consumes. Thus the extra energy required to build a hybrid is negligible over its lifetime.

3) Hybrid batteries last the lifetime of the car (under warranty for 8-10 years) and are fully recycleable.

Conservatives are just afraid of hybrids because they're too concerned about their image!

Theoretically, yes, a hybrid automobile is a fuel saver. However this has to be weighed against the additional cost of the hybrid versus the comparable model and the difference in maintenance costs in the long term. Insurance costs might figure into the model, but I suspect that the differences there aren't too far from each other.

My guess is that if someone intends to operate the automobile for a long period of time (five years or more), then it is likely worth it, especially with the price of petrol being what it is. Hence, I agree that economics and the environment are not always at odds with each other.

With gas prices as high as they have been the last few years, a hybrid will save you about as much money on gas as you pay extra for the hybrid system itself (compared to a traditional IC-only vehicle with comparable features), over the life of the vehicle.

At the moment, the Prius is so popular that it's high re-sale value gives it a startlingly low total cost of opperation - but that's only true so long as you can sell a used Prius at a surprising premium, and that probably won't be for much longer.

If gas prices were closer to $5-7 a gallon, then any hybrid would be a pretty good deal compared to a comparable conventional vehicle - and, alternative fuels would also be more economically viable. So, if you love the environment and fear global warming, pray for ever-increasing war, bloodshed, and chaos in the middle east to drive up that price.

Well, you have to weigh costs against benefits. Energy efficient things COST more. If they didn't everyone would buy them. So how does the additional cost (paid right now) repay itself in savings (spread over the lifetime of the item)?

For some low price of gasoline, the fuel savings on hybrids clearly does not justify the cost. For some high price, the savings does justify the cost.

Is the price high enough yet? Hybrid buyers apparently thing so, others either do not think so or have other reasons to find a hybrid unsuitable (such as hybrids being too small for their needs and/or less crash-safe than heavier vehicles).

Failure to weigh benefits against cost is one of the main problems with modern "liberals."

The coming ice age is real, oops I meant to call it global warming, no crap I meant to say climate change. Either way you do not get it because you are a big conservative dummy. Just because our scientists have been caught in massive frauds and cover-ups does not mean that global warming does not make it colder. Everything is a sign of global warming! Besides that we have a consensus among scientists. Either way you would not understand that you have to spend trillions on a bureaucracy to save money. I guess you are not as smart as we are.

You considering all conservatives to be greedy is also a stereotype. Don't kid yourself.

To answer your question, there are vehicles that get better gas milage than hybrids. Plus where are you getting the electricity to recharge the batteries? Coal burning plants I bet.
There are also vehicles that do less damage to the environment than that of the Prius. The nickle used in the prius battery comes from Canada. Google Prius batteries, then hug a tree.

I am Conservative, 47 year old Executive.
1. Global Warming. I quit driving over a year ago, and commute on a bicycle and bus, in a business suit in a rural community, to do my part.

What is it you are willing to "Sacrifice" to do your part.

2. AlGore got even richer, by selling Carbon Credits, when his Familly money came from Tobacco Farming and Coal Mining. Very "Global Friendly" indeed.

Your right. I spend about $1.05 a day on transportation using my bike. And my wife tells me I look good too.

Global warming, if we could all stop fighting about it, is an excellent anti-terrorism tool. Decreased oil demand means less money for the countries that want to blow us off the map. It's so simple . . . and yet the debate flows around a documentary produced by an ex VP.

When you factor in initial cost and maintenance of a Hybrid, you will have to own it for 15 years to realize a savings.

Better yet:
Buy a diesel vehicle and use Bio. Lower cost, no pollution, same life cycle, about the same mileage, renewable esther as opposed to a finite supply of fossil fuel.
The more people that buy them the more available the fuel will be.
Exhaust smells like pop corn.
Already mandatory for many municipal fleets of heavy and medium duty vehicles.
You can make it in your back yard.
The Saudis can go back to herding goats at the Oasis.

Screw all global warming alarmists. They are idiots. Do all those Hollywood loons really think it will make someone change their lifestyle because they say so?? I think I'm going to go ride around in my Tahoe for hours right now just because you brought it up.... When I hear someone spew this global warming crap I like to do the complete opposite. When Cheryl Crow says to use 2 pieces of toilet paper I go flush a hole roll down the toilet. When Al Bore says to cut your lights off to save the environment I run around the house and cut them all on. If they really did have the facts to prove that global warming is man made I might seriously consider believing it. Just because a bunch of liberal scientists say it's real don't mean it is. People shouldn't be so gullible as to by into this so quick..
