I have a 91 Blue Ford Taurus and I wanted to fix up the paint job. It had lots of scratches so I compounded them out and used a paste wax (which was hell and I never want to use again) (all Turtlewax products). A week later it looks like the wax is gone and the scratches from the compound are horrible!! -fine swirls all over.

So, 1.Is there a finer compound I should use or does it just need a new clear coat?
and 2. Is there a wax (not a paste wax) that is fairly easy to apply and lasts longer than a week??

I can't afford a new car so I am trying to make the best of what I have. Any help is greatly appreciated! ; )

OK buddy, lets see if I can help. First of all, wash and degrease your car. Use a panel wipe solution that will remove silicon and grease.
Then you want a machine glaze. This is a polishing compound. Polish the car all over with a buffer.
THEN you want to protect the new shine with a wax.
If you need an expert opinion, go to your nearest paint supplier and ask their advice on the restoration products they sell.

Hope that helps.

If you have deep scratches try any brand of polishing compound first. If that doesn't do the trick rubbing compound may be in order.
I've always had good luck with the Mothers three step -cleaner, swirl remover and carnuba paste wax.
Two of my cars sit out all year long and water still beads on the two lighter color cars. The third one is dark green and I've had to repeat the procedure in 9 months on that car. I think the dark color heats the wax a bit more than the lighter ones.
Incedently, two cars are a 98 Mercury Sable and a 03 Ford Taurus. The third is a 04 Toyota Camry.
I'm a stubborn old buzzard but I'm pretty much sold on this Mothers complete three step waxing procedure.

if you used a buffer on it you will get the swirl marks unless you use a foam pad on it,those wont leave swirl marks on them, you may have to do it again to get it to hold its shine, try using a soft paste wax on it,and hand rubbing it,that should make it hold its shine a lot longer, good luck on it.
