As long as the exhaust and intake are above water, a diesel engine can run underwater. A diesel engine only temporary needs electricty to turn over the engine to start it. Once started, it is purely a compression only engine. So as long as everything is well sealed (ie water doesn't get in through the crank seals, valve cover seals etc.), a diesel engine can run underwater.
Which is why the original diesel Hummer H1 could travel in over 5 feet of water if they had the intake and exhaust adapters installed on them.

No your dad is wrong a diesel engine is no different when it comes to driving through water as a gas engine. If the water gets through the intake it will lock your engine up. You can not compress a liquid and since water is a liquid it would over power the compression ratio on either engine. Would actually be more harmful on a diesel engine because the compression ratio is about 2 times that of a gas engine.

That's not really true. Either engine could be destroyed if the intake sucks water into the engine. The only thing that he might be talking about is the fact that diesel engines do not have spark plugs or ignition systems. so there are much fewer electrical components which might be damaged by the water.

you have to be careful about crossing any type of flood related high water, but as long as you keep intake and exhaust clear and dont stall out you can cross pretty deep water, the military uses a snorkling kit on some of its diesel engines with great success.remember never try to cross a flooded stream.

As long as the air intake is above water and the exhaust pipe too they will run.

yes they can, because they don't have any ignition system on them at all,so getting them wet doesn't hurt them, there's nothing to get wet and stall it out, unless it gets in too deep, then anything will stall, but they can go through some real high water and not die out, good luck on it.
