My husband loves American history and we live in AZ. We've never been to the south before. We are planning a trip for the first week in October. We'd like to be near the beach in an area that has historical places to tour. Also, if you know of any great places to stay, I'd appreciate it! We will be traveling w/our 2 children ages 10 & 7.

You weren't real specific as to what 'South' you were talking about. I too consider 'the South' to be east of the Mississippi, which gives you unlimited possibilities.

Since I have lived in Charleston, I can tell you it is a great city with plenty to see from the Old Battery & Slave Market to the near by Plantations. Georgetown & Myrtle Beach are also close. I have spent many a vacation in Myrtle. (My beach of choice)

NC has the outer banks with Kitty Hawk & the Wright Brothers memorial, several lighthouses, and ferries to ride. The Battleship North Carolina in Wilmington, Tryon Palace in New Bern, and the list goes on.

The great thing is that you still have time if you act now. Why not contact each states visitors info and get their travel info and then decide and make reservations that suit your family. The great thing about heading to the beach in Oct is that it is off season and the rates will be lower so you can get reduced rates!

I second the suggestion of Charleston and Savannah. Lots of history and stuff for the kids to do as well. If you have time, try to go to the mountains in NC or SC as well. Only a few hours drive, and completely different from the coast. Also you may see a bit of color at that time of year, depending on elevation.

Also consider Wilmington, NC. The battleship North Carolina is there, as well as Carolina Beach State Park, Fort Fisher, and the NC Aquarium. Cape Hattaras is not too far, and the Outer Banks. Just a short ferry ride away is the historic town of Southport and Oak Island.

Both places will have lots of lodging available, lots of B&B or hotels, condos, motels, homes for rent on the beach. Have a great trip!

Visit Vicksburg, Mississippi, for Civil War battlefield history. They have a great tour and the park is immaculate. Drive up I-55 to Memphis and visit Graceland and take the tour. While there, go out to Mud Island and spend a couple of hours. If you are into the civil rights thing, visit the museum at the Lorraine Motel.

There are beautiful historic homes all up and down the Mississippi River. You could even do a tour of the haunted ones, like the Myrtles. End up in New Orleans and have a great time.

Probably the best area is the Charleston, SC and Savannah, Ga. Both places are right at the coast and only about a 2 hours drive. Lots of history in these places.

Go to New Orleans, it is one of the most historical and culturally significant cities in the country. You will see and experiance things there that you can't find anywhere else in the country. It's so unqiue and has so much character and is worth a visit.
