I would carefully inspect the brake pads and rotors. Most auto parts stores have rotor lathes to true them back up. If the rotors are unserviceable because of rust, corrosion or the overall thickness is too thin you may need new or better ones from a scrap yard. If you have a set of vernier calipers or a 0-1 micrometer you can easily pick something in better shape at a car recycling yard.
If not any auto parts store has off-shore el-cheapo rotors for $20. - $30. each for your car. If you can afford top shelf American, Canadian or British brands - AC-Delco Wagner or EBC brands you're a lot better off. The life expectancy of the off-shore is two yrs. at best. The metallurgy and annealing properties is simply put awful. They rust, corrode and warp very easily.
If new brake pads are needed dust free organic based pads are the best deal. They'll never wear out a brake rotor. All Toyota cars come factory equipped with organic pads. You'll never see the usual red / orange brake dust and dirt on any Toyota. The next best are ceramic pads a little dirtier but a very good choice. Avoid semi-or full metallic pads because they eat brake rotors and are the nastiest (dirtiest) pads of all.

it sounds like you wore through your disc pads. this just leaves the mounting bracket to rub against your disc rotors to stop you. the metal brackets are not designed to do this, and dig into your discs. You probably no longer have shiny discs, but rough grooves cut into your discs. You will need new pads and discs. It is possible the way you describe thigs is exaggerrated, and you are just hearing the warning part of the pads, signalling the above scenario is soon to happen. But if it is shaking and making noise, it probably already happened.

you need to get your routers redone, and your brake pads. Also, when this happened to me, i hit a pothole on a gravel road, my fan became lose and the radiator started to heat. It made my car shake when the fan went and wasnt even attached anymore. Check that out too, but its probably the roters and brake pads.

if it is a metal sound and only happens when you brak you prob. need brake pads. if your rotors are warped it will cause the car to shake. the axle boots may need checked also. they will cause a clicking or bumping sound mostly when turning and are apt to go bad in that make and model. i know it seems crazybut different problems make different sounds :-) good luck

It sounds like you have run out of brake pad, and therefore you are scraping the rotor. You should get a brake job done immediately.

Rotors, pads or shoes; get to a mechanic before the damage gets worse.
