Since in Canada, gay couples can marry, how would one choose their last name? i know it sounds weird but would you keep your own last name or take your boyfriends last name or maybe hyphen both names together? I mean i have to admit, my boyfriend has the better last name so in my situation i may just take his... but it can be so confusing eh?

The more masculine of the two of you gets to keep the name. The fem has to change his.

When I have the legal right to marry I will hyphenate my last name with my name being the first one. My husband will retain his last name. We talked about this a while back and both made our own decisions.

I hope some day to legally be known as Tab Hunt-Wisdom

We have been together 17 years and had a commitment ceremony (not legal) in 1992.

In my situation my partner and I are not married because we live in the USA but years ago we had our names changed. We both have very uncommon last names and did not want to lose that uniqueness. But we felt a need to show our commitment to each other. We use the hyphen but in different order. I have my single last name first, then a hyphen and then my partner's single last name. My partner has his single last name first, then a hyphen and then my single last name. It is not confusing for us and if someone has questions we use that as an opportunity to education them that gender and last names do not make a family, love does.

He wants to take my last name, he thinks it has prestige worth taking advantage of. Personally, I don't think it's that good, so I want to hyphenate.

I think I would want to keep my own last name, even if I were in a straight relationship.

my husband and i hyphenated. my name goes first, although, i would've preferred his, because it would be alphabetical. on the other hand, it's kind of fun being known as the s n m's

Seriously, whatever name you choose, use it. As long as you aren't out to defraud anyone its completely legal.
