It is a neccessity psychologicaly. We all have to have an image that our sub-conscious can relate to. It matters little what the interest is. The patriot will relate to his national flag. The extremist to a national figure's picture or a religious symbol.
Whatever that symbol is it will stimulate an emotional response from the sub-conscious wherein our feelings are stored.
