There is no way we've become that politically correct. I'm not saying I want to call someone this but I just want to know how I'm supposed to describe someone that isn't "literally" this way? I was watching Comics Unleashed and I noticed that when a comic said that word, he was bleeped. I understand we shouldn't be making fun of people who are seriously mentally challenged but back in the day, who didn't call their cousin a "retard" because of acting goofy?

It just slips out sometimes. My mother has a friend who's son is literally mentally challenged. It would make me really angry if someone called him that word. In the grand scheme of things, I guess we really shouldn't call each other mean names period.

For the situation you mentioned with your cousin, you should still say 'retard' if you can't say anything funnier or nicer.

You shouldn't use the word retard on someone who is actually mentally challenged, but if you start calling your cousin mentally challenged, it cheapens yet another word, and political correctness will need another update in a few years.

Retard is not politically correct. That said, political correctness is like ettiquite--rules of manners to be polite. If you don't feel the situation calls for being polite (like joking around with your cousin)--you can break PC rules. Just try to watch your company--if the dad of a mentally challenged kid is standing nearby when you call your cousin retard, you are going to hurt his feelings--and for what? A bad joke?

It is totally considered un-PC but I am also from the old school too and I'm sorry I don't see the word in and of itself bad. because I personally don't use it in a context to actually describe someone who actually is mentally challenged

and oh well I guess I'm just not PC I still use the word around my friends, in the same context as LA LAW.

Retard is perfect for a pet name for an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend, a least favorite politician or the idiot in front of you in traffic, but those who are really retarded should be referred to as mentally challenged.

personally.....i take high offense when people use that word as a synonym for dumb/stupid/slow minded.......because i have a mentally handicap aunt and i just love her to death and she is such a nice person.......57 w/ the i.q. of a moderately disfunctional 6 year old but she is teh best person i know!!! she never makes comments on race/sex/etc...never is mean to anyone always asks how u r doing!! and if that means she is dumb then people in the world are all idiots and more mentally restricted then she!

We used to call a person a retard but that is not considered mean. I don't think people should use it because they are not being kind.

However, in so many areas PC is just dumb.
