You need a lot of confidence and/or courage. The ability to be the odd person out. Commitment to some vision or project helps.
Be prepared to take criticism from others and endure a certain amount of setbacks and temporary humiliations. Other people who follow the conventional ways will seem like they're getting ahead faster than you. But, if you can make it through all of this, it just might be worth it.
It's very hard, but hopefully worth it.

It's not up to us to "follow the story" of our life.
Our job is to do what we're supposed to do: Be a productive human being, live a decent and honest life, raise our children to be good citizens and save our hard-earned money so we could take of ourselves in our old age.
