How can you blame it on him? Its the Raiders and Al Davis. Why do you think they signed Dante? So they dont have to worry about Russell.

Yeah, I think Russell is definitely hurting himself in not getting signed. How worried can the Raiders be, they've got Culpepper, who would be the starter anyway for most of the year even if Russell was signed. Just take the money now, it's a lot of money, more than you've ever seen, and get on the field so you can improve yourself and become a franchise quarterback. Then you have the right to ask for as much mula as you want. Raiders record 3 to 5 wins this year.

Russel just needs to sign the contract even if it does have a Vick/Pacman clause in it. I can understand a team not wanting to give a player 30 mil guarenteed then have him get suspended for something stupid. Al Davis also needs to be more flexable with the injury clause since it is a contact sport. To the person that said losing Moss was a big blow....he wasnt even the number 1 receiver last year...he basically took up space and money... we have Curry and Porter and with Culpepper staying healthy ( crosses fingers the new blocking scheme for the O line works) we couls pull out a 8-8 record but the playoffs are 2 years away. Our division is just too tough.

I'm no fan of greedy &stupid athletes but when you think about it,Russel holding out and forcing the Raiders to sign Culpepper may have been the smartest thing that he could have done because it just added 5 years to his career. If Russel had been the starter since Game 1 he would have had a short and injury riddled career.Sitting on the bench for season or two and watching Culpepper may be the best thing that could have happened to him.

It's not about greed. It's about the trend right now in regards to guaranteed money. The Raiders and JRuss's agents are at an impasse with the guarantee, which is around $30Million. Al Davis flat out said he didn't have a problem with the total value of the contract, which is about $60Million.

As another person has already mentioned, this was all discussed prior to the draft, and the Raiders picked him anyway. They had to... they needed a QB.

The bigger question here is the issue of guaranteed money for rookies. The NBA should prove as an example to the NFL in how to move forward with this. While the NBA has it's fair share of problems, they were able to keep rookie paydays in check by implementing a graduated pay scale based on draft position, and allowing them free agency after 3 years.

Until the NFL gets this in check, we're going to continue to see holdouts, and these unreasonable demands from agents looking to get the most upfront green for their clients.

Last I heard the only thing holding him up signing a contract was like $3-5 million. The Raiders want to offer like $31 million and he wants $35 I believe.

I think they will probably tie last seasons record because they do have Culpepper and an offense that is coming together slowly. However the loss of Randy Moss will hurt them even more now. Also their defense for the most part is still pretty young with some Vets still lagging around.

He is definately being greedy. He's asking for the richest rookie contract in NFL history when he only had a good, not great career at LSU. I mean, guys like Bush, Young and even Mario Williams had a better career than he did. Plus, he wants more gauranteed money than LaDainian Tomlinson?? I think the Raiders should play it safe and make sure they have themselves insured in case Russell doesn't work out for them. And since Russell has held out this long, it doesn't look like he'll much of an impact either.

Of course he is. Anyone who holds out for the kind of money that Dwight Freeney just got without ever playing an NFL down is stupid and greedy. Maybe he realizes he's going to be a bust and just wants to get his huge payday. Smart move by the Raiders to get Culpepper, anyway.

As far as the Raiders record goes this year, I'll be surprised if they win 4 games. But I'd say that even if they signed Russell in time.

I hate russell, I hope he comes to a agreement then just gets his leg broke in the first game for being a greedy player, who apparently isnt in it for the game. If I was another player on the raiders, I would have no respect for the guy who is supposed to be our leader. So I dont see things working out with russell because im sure the other teammates already hate him.

They will win 3-4 games, by luck.

Maybe. The 2 sides need to come to an agreement soon. And the raiders have culpepper. They will probably win 5 or 6. They cannot possibly be any worse than last year. At least Culpepper is a proven leader.

He is holding out for a clause in his contract that specifies what he gets paid if he is suspended or hurt, greed has nothing to do with it at this point. He has to realize that he may only have one or two years of big money if he gets hurt, so he has to secure his future now. The Raiders will lose a good 10 to 12 games, they haven't done much to improve themselves. The Raiders have had good drafts the past three years, so the future is bright.
