The sound:
1. The cough
2. Pretend to phone someone in a loud, jovial voice.
3. Shout "Viva Mbeki!!" to disguise the fart (no pun intended...really.)
4. Accidentally activating the car alarm.
5. Lean over to one side in your chair to let it out silently (doesn't always work)
The Smell
1. Hang around a restaurant serving garlic dishes, durian or stinky tofu.
2. Pretend to pick something up on the floor between your legs and sniff in hard. (beware: recycled farts come out twice as stinky the second time round)
3. On a summer afternoon in a minibus taxi, the smell shouldn't be a problem.

We have a saying "Wher'er you be let your wind go free." You will be amazed at the response of people if you make a big show of it with all the grimaces and leg movements. They ignore you but if you try to disguise it they point fingers and accuse you.
Once on a holiday on the Costa Brava we were shopping in an indoor/outdoor shop when I had the sudden urge.Not wanting to embarrass the Family I sneaked into the shop and found a nice quiet little corner. After double checking everything was OK I let go with an enormous blast. Suddenly I heard "Ole" and there was an old Spanish woman about 80 sitting on the ground amongst a rack of clothes. I nearly pissed myself laughing.

Good question, I also need some info on this. At work I usually walk away from the people. We work in a supermarket. One day, we were sorting out the broken and overdue dated goods, and I could not keep it in, and luckily for me, there was a packet of smelly minced meat. Saved my bacon, there. Bad of course, when one is not able to walk away from one´s foul deed.
