A long lecture as a teen about when you become an adult, people out on the street won't give a damn about you? I had to go through hearing that. Do you really feel that strangers don't care about others they don't know?

Well, your parents were and are right unfortunately! Most people don't care about YOU the PERSON!,... Rather they care about what YOU can OFFER them!

This is one of the toughest parts of life to really face. Others don't give a damn if you live or die. Worst of all, you will have to face this fact about lots of people around you --- co-workers, bosses, medical people, neighbors, old friends, etc.

This is one of the things in life that you can't take personally, and that you can't wish away-----because to exist and survive and be mentally healthy, you have to LOVE and treasure yourself in a world, a universe, of uncaring people, who neither hate, love, or know you. You have to carry this love of yourself always, and live off it, long after all your relatives, parents, and other people you know, have passed away.

This is why you, yourself, and your parents, are so important right now. It isn't going to last forever, but you will have to go on, to exist, and find happiness. Real happiness and safety is creating an island of your own, in yourself, where you feel a motivation, and can keep going. So, even though strangers (and most non-strangers) don't care, you will care, and be there for yourself. Practice thinking that way---be prudent.

For the most part consider the moral to be-relay on yourself. You should never think someone will care enough to help you out. While the thought is warm and fuzzy the probability is just a high enough factor to lend any weight. Are people good and do people care? Yeah sure, some do. Will they do anything about it, doubt it.
How many times have you stopped to help someone change a tire. Its good sense to provide yourself with any wisdom that may be drawn from in situations of need.

Your parents gave you that sermon because they adore you! I got it from mine, and I shared the same wisdom with my own children. I don't think strangers really concern themselves with what may be going on in our lives, as they really have no way of knowing! Life is simply too busy for most strangers to care, sadly. Stay close to those whom you love. They will always care about your well being! Have a fantastic weekend! Annie

Yes. I feel like there is some people out there who are only interested in others if it affects them in some way. Then there are the people who care about others no matter what. As a young adult, I have seen first hand how nice people can be to people and how worthless some people are.

I've heard all the sermons! Some strangers are ok but mostly just remember this- do NOT trust anyone! That was my biggest mistake when I was introduced to the real world (after I moved out of my moms').

okay being a mother of a teenager i can understand what your parents were trying to say... maybe they should have said it a different way but here is what i think they are trying to say to you. its not that the people out in the "Real World" wont care about you because im sure some will.. but, strangers wont care if you are safe.. if you are getting enough sleep or even if you are eating well. your parents always will.. people in the street wont have your back. its very easy to think that your parents are just preaching to preach but the truth is that they care..

just try to see it from their point of view.

I think they were trying to tell you that people in general don't care about others these days. Like on the job for instance. They don't care about whether you're sick or if someone has died, as long as you come in for work the next day. Most people are selfish and could care less, so I think that's the point they were trying to make.

No, I never got that lecture, but I can see where they are coming from because if you don't protect your children no one else will! They are just trying to prepare you and save you some heartache! There are a few people out there who may help you, but most people are too busy or sadly just don't care about some one they don't know! Just watch your back out there & be safe & don't truse anyone but yourself (and family)

The essence of that lecture is to remind us that no one owes us a living and that we have to work hard for ourselves.

But I don't agree that strangers don't care about people they don't know. Sure, I won't give you money just because you owe thousands on your credit card bill but I'll always include strangers in my prayers!

Yes I heard that before. I do agree to a certain extent that most strangers don't care about others they don't know. I'd say 1 out of every 20 strangers might help you if you really needed it.
