Generalization is a very valuable tool that we use in many different thought processes and ways. Stereotyping is a form of generalization. But to be exact, stereotyping is to take a generalization and apply it to on a wide scale without allowing for individual differences.

People stereotype because they are natural generalizers, but forget that individual differences exist or that their experiences, which are most likely limited, may not include enough information to form an accurate picture.
