I'd consider the Jeep Patriot Sport 4x4 a very good option for your requirements, you can probably get one for about 16 grand and it gets almost 30 mpg.

Depending on the terrain, I would probably take a Ford Focus ZX-3 or ZX-5.

They are front wheel drive, and they have options for traction control if you want it.

They get great mileage, are easy to maintain, are inexpensive to begin with - I have one of each and they have been very reliable. I drove the ZX-5 through the cimmaron range in new mexico in the middle of winter and it handled great on snowy/icy roads - even in the mountains.

If you want something with 4-wheel drive or AWD, I would go for the Suburu Impreza WRX. It is considerably more expensive - but is one bad-azz little vehicle. They have the same sized drive shafts on all four wheels, so they don't torque steer, and they can go damn near anywhere.

4wd ability that each and every person 4 wheels are grew to become via the engine. In a front wheelpersistent, the returned wheels are actually not powered, and in a rear-wheelpersistent, the front wheels are actually not powered. gas mileage isn't in many cases an argument in case you have finished time 4wd, a l. a. Subaru. notwithstanding if this is a Jeep, or different SUV or truck, with a shifter to bypass it between 2 and 4wd, the gas mileage in 4wd would be decrease than in 2 wheelpersistent. further, utilising 4wd in certainly one of those automobiles on dry, delicate street will reason injury to the hubs.

I'm with Tim. There's no way I wouldn't pick a Hyundai given the criteria you mentioned, because of the warranty.
