less than a week after we had the timing belt replaced, the ac belt kept shredding. after much inspection, our (a different one than who replaced the timing belt) mechanic found one of the pulleys to be slightly off... could that have happened in the replacement of the timing belt?

If your compressor is seizing you can tell by looking at the grooved side of the belt for stress marks and such. If the pulleys are in line the only thing I can think would be the pulley might be on backwards. Or your tensioner might be stripped so it loosens up and eventually slips off.

When it was put back together something got twisted or moved out of line. Mayve a spacer or washer was left off. At any rate, the mechanic found which pulley was out of line and corrected the problem. To truly know, you would have to ask your mechanic, what he did.

What kind of car?

Most newer cars require you to take the accesory belt off to remove the timing belt cover, so yes - chances are the original mechanic screwed up.

Demand compensation.

yes it could ,some of them had a small spacer that went in them to make them line up,if it was lost during the job, that would make it do this, and also they may not have tightened the belt up right on it,id say that's what has happened to it,id take it back, and have them re-align it,it will keep shredding belts until they get it back in line again, good luck on it.

It could have and it might not have. You don't have the proof required to have money refunded any more since you had it fixed. Worse you can't even have the jerk that screwed up in the first place fix his mistake.
