This is such an odd question but:

I would give this one specifically:

The length of a computer keyboard is 11 inches longer than it is wide. The total area of the keyboard is 80 inches squared. Find the length and the width of the keyboard.

A = LW
80 = (x + 11)(x)
80 = x^2 + 11x
x^2 + 11x - 80 = 0
(x-5)(x + 16) =0
x-5 = 0 or x + 16 = 0
x = 5 or x = -16
x must equal five as negative dimensions do not exist
x = 5 = width
x+11 = 5 + 11 = 16 = length

Quaratic equations and Heights & Distances aren't very tough topics. I wonder if quads with two variables are inlcuded in the syllabus. You can put questions on that.

If you are looking for short cuts to intelligent questions than I would suggest you look up the study material for these topics in some coaching books for B-school admission tests ( CAT, etc). They have some good questions and most are high school standard with a twist.

Yes

Math equations are tools - I would have you use your notes and - as a twist - have problems that were designed by the class in previous assignments.

The questions on the test would include whether or not we would use this in the real world.....of course if we didn't become mathematicians. Useless knowledge?
