I have a 98 civic that I am replacing the cvc joints on, a friend tells me that you dont have to compress the spings, just wondering if you do.

Jack up front, place jack stand under lower arm, pull the wheels, turn the spindle, unbolt axle nut, unbolt upper ball joint, pull spindle toward you, slide axle shaft out of spindle, use a quality pry bar and pop axle out of transmission. Re assemble oin reverse order.
You may need to pull the brake calliper to get the spindle to move enough to remove axle.
With the right tools, it should take 10 minutes a side.

You don't need spring compressor, but you do need air compressor and impact wrench to take out that axle nut. That nut is supposed to be torqued at 140 ft/lb but when trying to take out, it feels like 300 ft/lb. My impact wrench that shoots 250 ft/lb was not able to take it out.

I was told that you can have big fat guy sitting in the front seat with the wheels down, it is possible to remove that nut using just hand tool.

no you don't there made in with the struts on that one,you don't have to compress them,good luck on it.
