I live in Cardiff and the cycle paths are rubbish. Most of the time i cycle to work using side streets so few cars about, but if i want to go to the city centre its along a very busy main road, which has a very wide footpath. if i am courteous and give way to pedestrians, is it still wrong of me to ride on here? i don't want to get hit by a bus!

You might be a careful courteous cyclist, but so many who persist in riding on pavements (sidewalks) are not. They ride at full speed expecting people to get out of the way; completely failing to realize the pavement is for pedestrians and pedestrians have priority. It is illegal but the police can't be bothered. The Mayor of London is thinking of giving Community Service Officers the power to levy an on-the-spot penalty for (adult) pavement riders. Worst of all are the cyclists speeding along coming up behind you. If the local authority cycle paths are not to your liking, maybe you should think about taking the bus

Because technically a bicycle is a road vehicle even though it does not need a licence.

I too ride on the pavement on busy roads but not when a lot of pedestrians are about because like you I am not into suicide. Give motorists their due most of them give a cyclist plenty of space but sometimes there is no space to give and I know as a motorist how frustrating it is to be stuck behind a cyclist doing when the road ahead is all but clear.

I do not think the so called cycle lanes help very much because often they are pot holed or have badly fitting grids in them

The answer to this is simple, the pavements are for pedestrians only. I live in Norwich and cyclists are constantly riding their bikes on the pavements, they are like parasites, rude arrogant and dis-respectful. Their excuse is that it is safer for them on the pavements, but what about pedestrians. Where can they go if cyclists are constantly taking up the space, what about our safety. If I was forced on the road because there was not enough room I would receive verbal from motorists and other cyclists.

I am totally fed up of cyclists doing this and would welcome heavy fines for anyone other than the emergency services using the pavements.

You may be courteous to pedestrians, but the law can't allow you to do something but deny the same right to someone else because they may abuse it. it's the law, pavements are for walking on, if the local cycle paths are bad complain to the council. Don't risk injuring others.
