They do that when they get low on freon. You are suppose to have a low pressure switch that will cut out the compressor when that happens. If someone has jumpered that switch, then the lines and the compressor can freeze up.

You need to take the car to a shop and have the leak fixed, and the right amount of freon installed. good luck.
