HELP! I have FF and IE. Firefox won't work. IE 6 works but won't allow access to password protected sites.

Hello. Problem is exacerbated by the inability of either browser to access sites with any level of security. I think that my system may be compromised but I am not sure. I have never seen this behavior before. Please help.

Try restoring all the Internet settings to their defaults and see if that makes any difference.
