Well, personally i feel that there is a huge difference between someone who can play an instrument really well, and someone who is a true Musician. I am a drummer, and every day i see drummers who show off by playing really loud complicated fills and people think its pretty cool, but they are a dime a dozen. You can never get to the top by having the coolest fills or playing the fastest riffs on the guitar. A TRUE musician is someone who doesn't just play music. An awesome musician listens to music, feels the beat inside them, can close their eyes and hear every single instrument's part coming together to create beautiful sounds. A musician knows that they are not the most important part of the band, every instrument counts. An awesome musician is one who has mastered how to be a part of the band, by not only playing to the fullest extent of their abilities, but by playing in a manner that enhances all of the other instruments making the entire band sound better. So basically when i think of an awesome musician, i think of someone that understands not only their instrument, but also appreciates the greatness of all other components of the music world. Some examples of great musicians that i always think of:
Beck
Santana
The Beatles

Lots of folks. Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein, Yo Yo Ma, Artur Rubenstein, Ray Charles, Simon and Garfunkel, together and apart, Billy Joel, Elton John, Charlie Daniels and the fiddle player in Celtic Woman. They've all left me breathless or in tears or both at one time or another and there are probably countless more...

Anyone that has "chops" - that is, someone who has honed their craft and is very knowledgeable in what they do.
Otherwise, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-yo Ma, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, E. Power Biggs, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt... and a whole lot more.

Jimi Hendrix, playing Foxy Lady on his acoustic guitar for me at a party after a concert. THAT was a 'totally awesome' experience, from the most 'awesome muscian' of all time.
