two choices,

1. if you dont mind always having PC on when laptop needs to connect to internet then just connect PC to laptop by ethernet cable and setup local network allowing Laptop access to internet through PC.

2. you need to get a router with built in modem, many of the wireless modem / routers have the facility to disable the wireless network and run just as a wired router.
connect router to phone line
connect router to PC
connect router to Laptop
(wireless routers generally have at least 2 and up to 4 ethernet ports to connect to, non-wireless would typically have 8 or 16 ports)

I presueme this is the situation you have:

1. You have an internet service that is terminated by a modem (DSL, CATV, etc).
2. You wish to link at least 2 pcs to the Internet connection.
3. You do not want to use a wireless connection.

You need a gateway router. The modem's internet feed plugs into the wan port of the router.

If the router has at least 2 LAN ports (some have 1 some have up to 4), you connect each pc's network port to one of the LAN ports. If you have only 1 LAN port on the router, buy a Network Switch and connect the router LAN port and each pc Network port to the network switch. You use straight CAT5 patch cables for these connections.

Configure the router properly.

Buy a router for around £40. You can buy a wireless one if yuor laptop is wireless, else a wireless anabling dongle costs about £20 and plugs into the USB.

ive got the same problem so i have one computer - mine as the main computer for accessing the internet and the 2nd computer connects to internet through mine. you will need a cable though to run between the two computers, but the benefits mean you can play lan games.

a small router, then if u have xp as operating systems it would connect automatically, use the wizard, a laptop is only something u can carry around instead of a desk top so just think of it as another comp and connect accordingly
