The difference between a Simpsons/Family Guy cross-over and the Jetsons/Flintstones cross-over is this...
...The Jetsons and The Flintstones were both created by the same people, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. They owned the rights to all of the characters, there was absolutely no red tape to combine the two shows.
The Simpsons were created by Matt Groening. Seth MacFarlane created Family Guy.
Matt Groening also created Futurama, so a Simpsons/Futurama cross-over would be easier.
Seth MacFarlane also created American Dad, so a Family Guy/American Dad cross-over would be easier.
With a Simpsons/Family Guy cross-over, they would have to meet with lawyers and figure out who does the work, how the royalties from DVD sales are split up...blah, blah, blah. It would be a big hassle.
I think it would be interesting to see a full-fledged cross-over special (rather than the little cameos that have been made in various episodes), but I'm sure it will never happen.

Well, I'd be damned if they do cause that would be awesome. They're doing something like that already where the Simpsons had Peter in Treehouse of Horror XIII when Homer makes clones of himself. One of the clones is Peter. And in the last Treehouse of Horror coming this Halloween, Marge is gonna kill several Fox sitcom characters, including Jack Bauer and Peter Griffin. Then there's "The Italian Bob" when Sideshow Bob is discovered, a police officer opens up a book with Peter's photo reading "Plagarismano" or plagarism.
Anyways, that'd be sweet. Stewie would invent some kind of machine that would send him into an alternate dimension, and somehow sends his family to the Simpsons world and the Simpsons to the Family Guy world. It'd be great. Although I doubt it would happen, though. Although Matt Groening (Simpsons creator) and Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy creator) are friends. So...makes you think.
Besides, The Simpsons have shown with the movie release that they are willing to take chances. As for Family guy, it would work for them because it would help their perception among those who watch Simpsons and not Family Guy. The best way to make this work would be to make it an hour and A half movie that would air on TV then go to DVD. Both Parties would get equal residuals and it would be something the viewers would love to see

It doesn't seem that unrealistic. Matt Groening and Seth Macfarlane have talked to each other in the past and expressed their love for each others work. The Simpsons have shown with the movie release that they are willing to take chances. As for Family guy it would work for them because it would help their perception among those who watch Simpsons and not Family Guy. The best way to make this work would be to make it an hour and A half movie that would air on TV then go to DVD. Both Parties would get equal residuals and it would be something the viewers would love to see. Kind of like when Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny were together on screen in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". Good Times :):):)

Peter and Homer have both done Cameos in each others series. As far as a crossover goes the Simpsons have had one with the Critic so maybe they wouldn`t mind doing a Family Guy crossover.

"I think they did have one episode of the Simpsons where Peter shows up for a few seconds."
True - Treehouse of Terror 13
"Send In The Clones" - Homer makes multiple clones of himself, one of which is Peter.
