They do a good job -if YOU do a good job!
Just take your time, rather than 'zipping' through. (And be sure to 'suck up' ALL of the water -that's just 'common-sense' of course...)
Also, even though they say not to add 'bleach' to the water, I ALWAYS do! Not too much of course, and only on carpets that won't be damaged by it.(Which is most...it's really just the "natural fibres" that the bleach will affect.)
I've always been satisfied with them. That and I don't like the idea of 'strangers' in my house.... AND you can clean EVERYTHING(furniture, car, pet beds, etc...) at your own pace!
F.Y.I. -You can also add "pot-pourri" to the water!(You can buy 'scented' mixes specifically made for this but they cost a LOT more, so why bother, it's pretty much the same thing.), or "fabric softener"(Which I prefer, as it also adds a measure of softness, protection from stains & 'static' control.). I do this AFTER I've done the actual 'cleaning' -I just do a quick 'once-over' to 'freshen' it up.
....Geez, I should really do my carpets too....:)

With all due respect to you, and budget concerns,,,as well as any others who answer, GOOD is relative.
The major issue in carpet cleaning has little to do with the carpet itself. It more involves the padding beneath.
ANY process that WETS the carpet, also WETS the padding; which is basically where the stain goes.
The substance of padding is SPONGE. The substance of carpet is usually WEAVE,,,allowing that stains and odors LEACH to the padding. In the DRYING process, obviously the face and fiber of the carpet drys first. The sponge/padding retains not only the stain, but the moisture, and drys last. That process allows that the stain can, and usually will, LEACH back UP into the carpet.
Steam cleaning by pros is a better method, but if a stain is in the padding, and the PRO WETS the carpet enough, then the situation is no better than pouring water on the stain and doing the job yourself. This is evident very obviously in PET staining.
Honestly........ the better process, especially for surface stains, is to BONNET the carpet. The bonnet is like a pad attached to a machine (like a buffer) that pulls out surface stains with modest spray chemicals, and does not allow a Soaking. That isn't a promise that any stain won't return, but it does work in a short term.

nope...hire a professional, you may pay more but it is well worth it in the end result.
they don't get all the water out of the rug nor all the soap. with soap comes build up of dirt and you have to clean it more often
