I repair printers for a living
If the Cartridge has the head attached to it you can refill it as many times as it can stand before it stops working, the quality of the print gets too bad, or the head drops off spilling the contents all over the place (very common with lexmark) but not that often.
on the other hand cartridges that do not have heads attached(copper/gold bits on the bottom) to them should not be refilled
the fixed head in the printer is designed for only one type of ink, dye or pigment which both work at different temperature's use cheap refill ink and the head will clog up or over heat.
Epson heads can be as much as £70 a time
refilled tanks WILL damage/reduce the life of the heads in an Epson or the new type HP printers

No!!!! Don't listen to Smedirk! Refills wont damage your printer or the cartridge! I recommend you find out about this place called Cartridge World, they specialize in ink refilling and refill while you wait for your convenience, just bring in an empty cartridge to your local Cartridge World, and you can save up to 50 percent on your ink or laser/toner cartridges here is the price for a lexmark #1 cartridge:

Staples price: $19.99

Cartridge World price: $11.00

Savings: $8.99 or 45%!

And the best part is the quality is just as sharp as a New (Original) Cartridge, and you have nothing to lose because Cartridge World offers a 100% garuntee, that if your cartridge doesn't work, you can return it and get your money back! So if you are interested call 1888-99-REFILL (733455) to find a store location near you!

If you have an Epson, Brother or Canon printer, yes refills can damage the printer.

If you have an HP lexmrak or dell a refill can only damage the cartridge.

If you want to save money, go for a re-manufactured or compatible cartridge from a reputable company, they will usually provide a guarantee that includes if something goes horribly wrong and the printer is damaged.

Either refills or other manufacturer's compatibles.

The compatibles often have more ink (as much as 80%) than the originals. I use Viking's own brand compatibles for my HP printer and Viking's black is 18ml v HP 11ml and colour is 13ml v 8ml

I think if you dont mind taking out a second mortgage the originals have to be the better option. I have been using refills recently and must say I`ve had no problems.
You pays your money and takes your choice

Gave up with Ink Cartridges...expensive!!!! Depending on the make of your printer, you may be able to get a "Continuous Feed Ink System". I make massive savings on my Epson 320 photo printer
Have a look at the link to get the idea.

Go with whatever, but if you get a faulty compatible or re-manufactured cartridge (which does happen on from time to time) no need to get angry with the company you purchased from. Know that you learned your lesson on buying NON-OEM ink cartridges
