We do not have the ability to hear anyones voice in this forum. To see facial expressions, to hear the tones of voices.....LOL etc were created BECAUSE of the internet......to let other people know that you're laughing, happy etc.....

People that are irritated by this, does this mean they don't like laughing?

No, it doesn't mean they don't like laughing. I, myself, am one of those irritated people. LOL irritates me because it does not accurately depict the person't reaction. If I make a silly comment, someone might CTS (chuckle to self) or just say TWF (that was funny) but no one reads something silly and just busts out laughing in front of their computer like some goon. You don't read Dilbert or the odd news of the day and just start cackling like a banshee. And it goes further than that. How about ROFL (rolling on floor laughing). No one really does that. I've seen funny things on the internet and people have said things that made me laugh, but never in my life have I fallen to the floor and rolled around laughing like a psychiatric patient. So, there it is, the reason people don't like LOL....or at least the reason I don't.

I don't think that's why, it may be because they are older and not in the know of the whole other language out there. The text and internet IM language, (i.e. LOL, LMAO, TTYL, BRB, etc.) It's a generational gap, and some don't even want to bother understanding what the abbreviations mean, and that's why they find it irritating.

It's not a matter of people not enjoying a good laugh, I think it's more a matter of it being over used. Someone asked a question the other day and it was like "lol do uz liiik ma boyz blah blah lol?" And I'm going - WHAT? I use LOL on occasion, but I won't use it every sentence or even ever other sentence.

I understand the purpose for LOL. I don't really mind it....except when you are having a conversation with people and response after response is just "LOL". It tends to make you feel like they are really not paying attention. So I guess I only dislike it when it is used to replace a whole conversation.

The only time it irritates me is when people use it in a face-to-face conversation... Or OMG, or LMAO... or any other abbreviation for that matter. It just goes to show the extent of laziness in today's human race..

I think that in general, a lot of people are irritated by the fact that nobody uses proper grammer anymore.

The only thing that bugs me is when people say Lolol because you're not laughing-out-loud-out-loud. You're just laughing out loud! I don't complain about it though, and I don't give people thumbs down when they use it. I just think it's weird. x3

In caps, LOL is annoying. lol is just fine. I mean, you wouldn't write Laugh Out Loud like that, would you?

Probably because people type it when they cant think of anything else to say in response to what the person they are talking to has said.

lol can also mean lots of luck
or lookout loser

it depends on how it is used at the end of a sentence.
