No, I have known good, kind people that never looked down on anyone and always helped people, even strangers, that lived in poverty, and I have known total assholes, that had been cruel to people and animals, that never helped anyone but themselves, that were very wealthy. None of them got what they deserved.

Yes,if only we knew what we deserve. When things happen,we can always find or manufacture reasons for them and say that.A life is full of so many things that it's not neither possible nor justifiable to bracket it into some sort of sayings or any linear beliefs. The unlimited curiosity of human beings to know their future and umpteen number of means or devices in use [palmistry, astrology, crystal gazing and what not] for that ,with well known results, bear testimony to the realities that it's just not possible. So,we don't know what we deserve and also don't know what we got is deserved or not. There are theories like 'Cause and Effect Life 'which help but only up to a point. Life continues to be a mystery.

Who determines what someone else "deserves"?
I believe in 'cause and effect' so in that way things happen for a 'reason' (I throw a rock at a window, the window breaks...the reason it broke was because I threw a rock at it)...but I don't think fate or some predestined plan causes things to happen or is the reason things happen...and when people have something negative happen to them and say "well, everything happens for a reason" it's just their way of trying to make themselves feel better...

No. I tried all summer long, to get a part-time job in retail. After applying and speaking to managers, none of the would even interview me. I tried so hard to get a jb, that I didn't get what I deserved. No life doesn't give people everything they deserve.

Did Maddie McCann deserve to be abducted from her hotel and potentially murdered? Did the 9/11 victims deserve their fates? I don't think so, however, I believe strongly in cause and effect, but whether or not a effect is "deserved" is another matter.

In a nut shell-life is NOT fair. Sure I could have been a Bill Gates or a DOnald Trump, but no I as well as you have to fight for what we want. Things are not handed to us on a golden platter-like the rich people.
That is why AMerica needs to wake up and revolt against our own Government and make them share the wealth.
Are you with me?

I think that things just happen, and that we, order seeking sorts that we are, tend to create a narrative that explains the events.

No. jews didn't asked to be killed in the holocaust. babies born with aids didn't 'deserve' it. people didn't deserve cerebral palsy or whatever. life is a combination of chance events and attitude/approach.
