You DID rescue him!!
If you took your pet from a bad situatiion, and placed him in a loving caring home, you rescued your dog! One does not have to litereally snatch the animal from the virtual jaws of death to say that you rescued him.

Our Quaker Parrot was rescued from a pet shop! He is almost blind, and as such he can get very concerned for his safety. If he sees a huge dark shape rushing at him out of the darkness, he does exactly what most of us would do in that startling situation-He tries to defend himself!!
The pet shop never tried to ascertain why the bird reacted violently. Instead they simply placed him in a cage with a big sign,"The bird BITES!" This sign almost assured that 2 things would happen:
1. Most good people looking for a nice pet would not go near him because they didn't want a "mean" bird.
2. Many children found it hysterical that they could make the bird panic by poking at him, or making startling sudden moves toward him. We actually witnessed this activity several times by children!

Yet when my wife approached him slowly, and spoke to him in gentle soothing tones, the bird tried to get close to her for love and affection! He showed that he wanted to interact, and that he was lonely!

We bought him on the spot, at a reduced rate because "He bites!!"

We took him home, and within 2 days I had proven that he can only see well at a distance of about 4 inches, and can only see shapes out to one foot away. With this knowledge in hand, we soon established a procedure for helping him feel safe. We announce ourselves to him as we approach his cage, thereby letting him know that he is safe.

Our bird is now a wonderful addition to our "flock." He is allowed out of his cage, he plays games with us, eats with us, and even goes visiting with the help of a "Flight Suit" with a leash. He is even friendly to strangers, and glories in the attention he gets!!!

Rescue animals can make some of the most caring and loving pets one would ever wish for , as long as one takes the time and effort to understand them, and help them!!

I got my dog when he was five years old, from a young couple that lived next-door to my father. The kids were moving and the new landlord would only allow them to have one dog,and they chose their other one. This little dog had been tied in their back yard almost all of his life, and needed lots of attention,(grooming, neutering, affection).
From the time I took the chain off of his collar until right now he has been my best friend. He stays very near me almost all off the time and travels with us when we are going to pet friendly destinations. He has adapted wonderfully to life in our house and now that I'm retired he is with me constantly.
You could say that I rescued him, since he was a "biter" to most people that got close to him,so if we hadn't taken him he would have been "put to sleep".
All of this occurred nearly ten years ago,"Keeper" (ironically this is the name his previous owners gave him) will be fifteen years old next January.

My older cat was a stray and we got him cause my fiances aunt and uncle saw him and he came up to them. They brought him into their basement and we were the only ones who wanted him at the time (we believe his previous owners kicked him out in winter time). We rescued him from a strays life.

I got my kitten from a shelter (helping paws to be exact in NY). I'm guessing they took his mother in and she had her kittens. He was the friendliest of the bunch.
I have a heart for cats and I'd love to take more in, but I can't (landlord won't let me. limited to 2 cats and no dogs).
I have a ferret which we bought from a pet store. She gets along with our cats perfectly fine.

I have three cats. Two are brother and sister. I was only supposed to get a female but when we picked her up, her brother was the only kitty left in the litter without a home. I took him too. My third cat was acquired. I moved into a new apartment and the cat that lived upstairs decided he liked my apartment better and moved in. He's been with me for three years. The other two have been with me for twelve.

we did get our rottie from a german breeder when we were living in germany. our cat is from a breeder in tn, found her on the internet cause we were looking for a specific breed. our lab is from a breeder in tx, where we currently live.
but we would've rescued pets, too. it;s not that we only wanted purebred pets.

I adopted my girl cat from a shelter, and I rescued my little boy from a scary redneck family who had him unvaccinated and covered in fleas.
