Alana this is why I point it out - this is why it took so long for them to outlaw slavery.

Being Muslim is not the issue here. People in this country used to cite Bible passages to justify slavery. Those passages still exist.

The modern-day slavery problem is part of the antiquated, backwards systems in several countries where poverty is rampant and the governments are ineffective.

This is a very serious problem and if you were really interested you would realize that using this as another opportunity to bash Muslims is totally inappropriate.

Did I miss hearing Jesse Jackson complain about slavery in Mauritania? Was Sharpton all over this? I know those guys are all about civil rights, so I must have missed those press conferences. Did Mauritania outlaw honor killings of their women also - if so they are really making progress.

Mauritania abolished slavery decades ago, a little late, but nevertheless they did it. The law passed last week imposes criminal penalties of prison time.

Mauritanian forms of slavery include practices of debt bondage, forced marriage and indentured labor and those practices have not been adequately addressed.

What is exactly your point?

I am indifferent to this decision of a nation that I have never heard of. I am glad that slavery ended in a nation but I don't know what Islam has to do with it. Slavery still exists in many countries that aren't Muslim... legal and illegal.

sadly, slavery is still practiced in so many of these areas. it is truly sad for the victims and it seems incredible to us here that it still exists and is sanctioned by their religion and their governments.
