Even though I ride Jap bikes, Harleys are good bikes regardless of what some people say. A great "starter" Harley is the 883, which is basically a stripped down Sportster. Reasonable price, lots of good used ones around because their previous owners wanted to move up to a bigger model and you can add lots of goodies to them for both performance and looks. They've made them for several years and they aren't really in demand for experienced Harley riders, so a good dependable used one could probably be had for $3-4k. Not sure, but I think the new ones are $6k. The new Sportsters have rubber mounted engines which makes them a great high speed bike because the old ones would shake the puddin' clear out of you at 70 mph+. The big bore Harleys are heavier and bulkier and are tough to learn on. Just keep in mind that for some Harley riders (not all by any means), Sportsters are considered women's bikes. If a guy pulls up on a Sportster at a serious Harley beer bash, his bike had better be tricked out to the max or he be one big, tough, ugly guy that crushes beer cans not on his forehead, but his mother's forehead.

You need to give more info. how tall are you, what riding experience do you have, what style of bike do you want etc. I've owned 26 bikes in the last 41 years, and while my last 5 have all been Harley's, including my new '07 Ultra classic, there are a lot of other bikes out there that are great too. In fact, if it were me, and this was a first street bike, I would probably go with one of the Honda "Shadow" series bikes. They are water cooled, ultra dependale, very reasonable in price, sporty looking ( I call them "metric Harleys") and come with several different motor options. Right now, Harley is having some problems with the new motors and I wouldn't recommend a new harley to anyone who isn't really familiar with them and can work on them. Plus the costs are way way high. A good starter bike or "ladies" bike is the sportster series. They are light, easy to handle and fun as all get out to ride. They are were offered in two engine sizes, but harley is dropping the smaller engine and going to the 1200cc motor only. You can buy a new sportster for as little as $99.00 per month from Harley.

Being a Harley rider and knowing alot of female riders.
Here's what I have learned. The Harley Heritage Softail is a great bike for women, because the center of gravity is lower and the seat sits low also. If you bought the 883 or 1200 smaller bikes, they have a higher seat and center of gravity is very high.
expect to pay close to $15,000. For a used Harley.
More around $23,000. or more depending on options you get on a new one. As high as $30k.

The most important question is how much will you have to spend. If you are new to motorcycle riding, it typically makes sense to start riding on a "smaller" (engine) cycle (ie, Harley's Sportster).
You height will also be a consideration as seat heights vary and you need to be able to touch both feet to the ground when the bike is stopped.

Just get the 883 Sporty and don't listen to all the BS that everyone will try to tell you about Harley's and the people that ride them.
It shouldnt matter what bike you ride...what matters is..."you're in the wind"
Motorcycling should be a brotherhood of people that share a common interest and predjudice shouldnt exist.
My wife rides a Honda Rebel, I own a 99 Sporty and nobody has ever given either one of us any $hit regarding either bike.
Of course, I stand 6-4 and go 275, so it's unlikely anyone with any sense would mess with me anyhow.

It relies upon on the form you assert it. For some human beings, it is purely rote and turns into meaningless and perfunctory. in spite of if, in case you propose it, then it comes by, and Mrs. Feetie is an quite fortunate woman.
