Sachin Tendulkar.
No one has reached the max. points (887) he reached (in 1998), so far in ICC ODI ranking for batsmen.
The present No 1, R.Ponting has a max. of 805 points.

Nice question. One name that people haven't mentioned so far is Dean Jones, the great Australian batsman. To my mind he was one of the catalysts for the game being played the way it is now. He was abrasive, walked down to the fast bowlers, stole runs from fielders constantly with his running between the wickets, and in an era where scores were much lower than they are now, averaged 45 at a strike rate of 73.
For similar reasons I'd also put Michael Bevan into the mix, probably the best middle order batsman and finisher the world has seen. His stats are also excellent, averaging 54 at a strike rate of 74.
As far as others go, I dug up some stats on them too:
Tendulkar Avg 44, SR 86
Lara Avg 40, SR 80
Jayasuriya Avg 33, SR 91
Gilchrist Avg 36, SR 97

However, my pick for the world's best One Day batsman ever would have to go to Viv Richards. Average of 47 at a strike rate of 90, again in an era where scoring was lower than it is today puts him head and shoulders above his contemporaries, and in my opinion above all others who have followed. His ability to take the game away from a side was unparalleled, and his innings of 189* in a team total of 272 against England in 1984 is justly famous. For me, the clear winner.

P.S. Can anyone imagine having to bowl against a top 6 line-up of:
Gilchrist
Tendulkar
Dean Jones
Viv Richards
Lara
Bevan

Good luck!

It can not be anybody else than Sachin Tendulkar. Let's not look at the record (which anyway proves he's way ahead of others who have ever played the game). But let's look at the pure joy he has provided to millions of spectators in the world. And doing that while carrying the burden of expectations of more than a billion people is what makes it more astonishing. There are Jayasuriyas, Gilchrists and Pontings. Of course, there is the Prince Lara. But SACHIN TENDULKAR is the god. When Sir Donald Bradman (the Sr. God himself) vouches for that, it says it all!

Adam Gilchrist.

He will win the game single handedly if he does well and even if he does moderately (like 20-30 runs) he will start the total rolling at an aggressive rate. Also he performs under pressure like in the latest W.C final and that is not the only time, he consistently does it when it really matters.

Also he makes the batsman at the other end relaxed because they do not have to score at a fast rate because he will cover for them so they can get their eye in and hit singles or dot balls for a while.

Great team player!

friends, really this is the hardest question i have ever faced on YA....as a indian my answer is that sachin tendulkar is the best coz he is my favourite player..but if u r really serious about this question i think brian charles lara is the best batsman i have ever seen in world cricket ...i m justifying my answer
sachin is best coz of his records and his genuine batting technique but he's never a game winner. except coco-cola cup happened in sharjah, he never win a game for india. he is not comfortable in difficult situations
brian lara is the most reliable batsman bcoz he is a match winner both in ODI and Tests. u all know about that...his batting is always according to situations.he can blast like gilchrist and play like tortoise in tests that's why his name is called as prince lara
charu says that don bradman awarded sachin.....as u all know that don bradman awarded sachin coz he assumed that sachin's batting style is similar to him..not for that he is a greatest batsman ever.....whatever
I LOVE SACHIN AND I LOVE MY INDIA

Sanath Jayasuriya. He changed the whole approach to one day batting with his aggressive style. Helped Sri Lanka to win the world cup in 1996 and was man of the tournament. Still a top class batsman. Wonderfull to watch.

Seriously, Adam Gilchrist. Can rip apart an attack like no other (2007 WC Final). Shahid Afridi is great to watch as well. Pre 1990's it's the REAL Master Blaster I.V.A Richards.
