S&M stand for sadism (sexual gratification from inflicting pain) and masochism (sexual gratification from experiencing pain). It wasn't really "created", but the practice was sort of brought into the limelight by a gentleman named Count DeSade (hence where "SADism" comes from).
People who participate in S&M, or BDSM, are in no way abnormal and you would be suprised how many people are interested in the lifestyle. If you're ever interested in reading more on the subject, pick up a book called "Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns". It explains a lot about why people are interested in BDSM and also gets into a lot of the basics for safe practices and techniques. I think you'll understand a lot more about it all once you read the book and you'll discover that there's really nothing strange about any of it.

Sadism and Masochism
It has been around for as long as there have been people. There is no way to say it was created on a certain particular date. The definition of abnormal is much more complicated and cannot be defined in such simple terms as these.

Ah, yes, Sadism and Masochism
A Sadist takes pleasure in seeing or inflicting pain
A Masochist takes pleasure in receiving pain.
There are plenty of people out there who do it, but it is not abnormal, many people at least try it once in their lives.
It has been around for a long time, probably longer than anyone can trace the routes to. I assume it has been a sex practice for thousands of years.

S & M stands for Sadism and Masochism
Its been around for hundreds of years. In 1498, the Italian philosopher Pico della Mirandola described a man who needed to be flogged before he could have sex (Farin 1990) but the term came from 1890–95; named after L. von Sacher-Masoch who described it. It used to be thought of as a mental disorder but now its just a persons preferance in my opinion.

What is normal? To some people its doing everything perfectly, to others its just living. S&M can be as normal as tea ans sugar, but some people are into that. Its only OK if both people are willing to let it happen. Some cant enjoy sex if it doesnt happen. If your opened minded it might be something you would like. Just remeber that your parnter must be willing also, or it could result in some times for both of you.

sadomasochism . it started being studied in the 1800s . because of religeous hangups etc some people need to bring whips and stuff into the bedroom . its a little odd but very commen . some people take it too far and others take it WAY too far . Dont ever let someone tie you up unless you really trust them .

It was created a long long long time ago....and no, I'm not abnormal because I like it. There is a WHOLE community within the LGBT community that supports and embraces it.
To all haters: Sticks and Stone may break my bones, but Whips and Chains excite me!!!!!

Sadism and Masochism.
Its been around for centuries, and who's to say what's normal and what isn't normal?
I think anything that occurs between two consenting adults is none of anyone else's business.

I agree. As long as it doesn't effect your ability to function as a person, it's perfectly normal. Different strokes for...you know what I'm saying.
S&M does stand for sadism and masochism (hurting others and hurting yourself), but the acronym stands for the common term "sadomasochism."

someone already covered the origins of the term "masochism", but they all forgot the Marquis de Sade. He gave us sadism.
