THERE WERE. BUT THAT WAS THE SMARTEST DECISION BECKHAM MADE.

Since most of these answers aren't any good and just bash Becks...
Yes, several European clubs offered him contracts, but the Galaxy offered the best contract. So you always take the best offer and Beckham's move to LA was not a mistake (as far as anyone knows, he is not scheduled to appear in any movies yet). There is nothing wrong with playing in the MLS - it is not a shameful thing. How many people who criticize Beckham can even play in a professional league like MLS?

I agree with EC's answer. In addition, both AC MILAN and INTER-Milan were interested in him. Arsene Wenger, manager of Arsenal would have taken him. So many teams were interested in him. But it is up to the player where he chooses to play. Just like when Roy Keane exited Manchester United, he had offers to play at other Premiere teams and many of the Italian Serie A teams, but he always dreamed of someday playing with Celtic. And he went there for very little money, (they couldn't afford him) but he went there anyway because it was a childhood dream of his.

People in the United States and the rest of the world need to understand that the figure of $250 million is not what Beckham's salary really is to play soccer with the LA GALAXY, he gets $400,000 from Major League Soccer (the league pays the player's salaries). Anything beyond that has to be paid by the team's owners. LA Galaxy's owners are AEG, they are paying the other $8-9 million a year. The rest of the money is all through corporate sponsorships. Just like Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods, Beckham will make the majority of his money through corporate endorsements. Let's not forget Beckham make most of his money the same way in Europe through corporate sponsorship deals.

In order to achieve international press, especially major press in America to promote the MLS and soccer, the league announced the 5 year contract as a $250 million deal.

I believe Beckham didn't come here for the money, but for the opportunity to become the person to help build soccer in America once again, like Pele, Beckenbauer, Rodney Marsh, George Best, and Giorgio Chinaglia did in the NASL in the 1970's.

I'm sick and tired of hearing how Beckham went to Hollywood to make movies. Movies are made in countries all over the world, including England, France, Italy, Spain, India, etc. So if he wanted to make a movie, he could of at any time. Including, during the off-season, he could've flown to Hollywood, or anywhere else for that matter to make a movie.

More power to Becks anyway, because coming to the U.S. to play soccer is not an easy move for anyone. He's going to have to adapt to the MLS style of play, or hopefully teach MLS players a thing or two. Also, Americans are very skeptical about soccer, even though there is a large percentage of us who love it.

So far, the American media has been useless in increasing positive media coverage about the sport of soccer. When you hear about Beckham it is ususally about him and his wife, Victoria and what she is wearing.

If there are any American soccer fans reading this, please contact your local TV sports stations and newspapers, and the national networks and ask them to cover soccer on a regular basis.

For the price tag - including the promo deals, I don't know if a team would have stepped up with such an offer. The Galaxy is not a good club, but it's the star power of the city that made it a natural.

Beckham was in Real Madrid. He was doing fine with the Red Devils until he fought with Sir Alex Ferguson. Probably Sir Alex knows David more than anyone of us. Assuming that was why David left because he wishes to prove a point or two. Adding to that is his glamorous loving wife and his American friends. I don't think he should be in America.
