Peter Benchley's novel of Jaws was better than the movie (meaning that it gave more character details just glossed over in the film), but they were pretty close.
I recommend watching the movie to be awed by the action and shark terror. Then read the book to learn more about what happened in between shark attacks.

I have seen 3 movie versions of "Hung Lo Meng", and one is just like the novel, said to be China's best of all time. I once visited my sister who lives in Houston (I'm in San Francisco) and rented that title from a Chinatown video store. I told her all about it being derived from China's greatest novel. When it began to play, I soon saw that someone had used the title for a porn film. Aiya, was I shocked. Sis said, "So that is China's greatest novel, huh?"
