Well, to spend much of your life as a researcher you would definitely need to go on for a Ph.D. in Anthropology after college (this is where you learn what to do), which would involve going somewhere for fieldwork. After that, you would need a job which would support your doing your research, so you would need to land one - most likely as a university professor somewhere. These jobs seem to be very rare - I have a couple of friends who work in the field, and one of them took many years to find a job (the other one was employed before I met her, so I don't know how hard it was to get the job in the first place).

The bad news: Most anthropologists are paid comparatively poorly, and have to get grants to be able to do their fieldwork if they can get them at all. Secondly, since their jobs involve more than just the research (they generally have to teach much of the time), they are not spending their lives traveling, although when they do get to travel, for example on their sabbaticals, they are generally gone for an extended period of time, like a year. Thirdly, most do not "travel the world", but travel back repeatedly to the same culture, or maybe two, throughout their lifetimes. There may be exceptions, but the ones I've known have spent their careers trying to understand one phenomenon among one group of people.

Well you haven't started college yet and from my experience that can really open things up for you. Colleges have study abroad programs and some classes go on short trips to other countries during breaks as part of the class. You'll get to know your professors and other students who want to do the same thing. You'll have a better idea of how to get where you want to go. Being in high school doesn't show you the same opportunities. Find the college you want to attend and go from there. Once you get into your classes and learn about opportunities to study in this field both in and out of the class, it'll open more doors. Professors can be very helpful in giving you some direction and advice. You don't have to worry about it so much now. Just focus on finding a school that has the program you're looking for and possibly some good opportunities to study abroad since it seems like that's something you're interested in.

Try to get a mentor who is already doing what you want to do.

I think you could start by asking your school's adviser to contact a museum for you and see if their is someone on staff who could guide you. Your academic adviser may have other options for you as well.
