As far as the Giant's, they will not be playing in October because they will not be making the playoffs this season...

It depends whether you're talking about football (American) or soccer (European football). I think you're talking about the NFL and the SF 49ers, but if you want to see some soccer San Francisco has the California Victory of the USL First Division. Their last regular season game will be on Sep 8, and it's not looking good for any playoffs because they are 4-13-7 and in 11th place out of 12 teams.

As for the NFL, the 49ers are in town 2 times in October so it would depend on when you're planing on being in California. The two dates are listed below:
October 7 vs. Baltimore 1:15 pm (CBS)
October 28 vs. New Orleans 1:15 pm (FOX)

I would personally go for the NO Saints game (Oct-28) because it will be more exciting with more scoring. The Ravens are a defensive team. You can get tickets to the game for $35 on ticketmaster (the link in my sources has the game already pulled up). Hope you enjoy the Golden State.

Too bad you are not coming in September...the Giants last home games are Sept. 24, 25, & 26 vs San Diego... the Giants have the most awesome stadium in the U.S. for baseball, it's right by the Bay with the Bay Bridge in back of left field. The Giants are in last place but have Barry Bonds, the best player of the last 15 years who just broke the Alltime Homerun Record!

The San Francisco 49ers are one of the finest franchises in the National Football League; they were the first team to win 5 Super Bowls and were Champions in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989 and 1994. We were the only team to ever win 10 or more games 16 years in a row.

After a few bad years the team has reloaded with alot of good young talent and should contend this season. Their home games in October:

September 30vs. Seattle1:05 pm
October 7vs. Baltimore1:15 pm
October 28vs. New Orleans 1:15pm

at "Bill Walsh Field at Monster Park."
We long time fans still call it Candlestick Park.

As many have already said, baseball's regular season will be done October 1st, then the post-season playoffs begins. The SF Giants will not make it to the playoffs so your chances of attending a game are slim. Tickets to a post-season game are on the pricey side anyway.

Watching a baseball game on television is still pretty good... it's free (haha)... and the level of competition in October is high.

What most of the world calls "Football" we crazy Americans call "Soccer." If you want to see Real Football, come on down to Los Angeles and watch David Beckham kick it around. American football is more like rugby than soccer.

If you decide to attend an NFL (pro football) game, there are two NFL teams in the area: the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders have a reputation for being the NFL Bad Boys and many of their fans are not the nicest of folks (if you catch my meaning). So i'd suggest attending a SF game rather than a Raider game. By NFL standards neither team is good, i'm sorry to say.

I enjoy NCAA (college) football games more than NFL games. The California Golden Bears, located in nearby Berkeley, CA are a fine football team. They will be playing Oregon St on Oct 13th. See first link for more info on Cal Bears football.

College games are traditionally played on Saturday and pro games are on Sunday. Football is the #1 spectator sport in the US so there is always a game or two (or six) on TV during the weekend.

For other college sports in the area check the second link.

If this will be your 1st time to San Francisco, you're in for a treat. The City on the Hill is one of the more picturesque in the world.

The San Francisco Giants are not a good team. Their position in the standings at the time of this answer is last place among 5 other teams in their division. Their record is 50 wins and 70 losses.

As for the football question, I don't have the schedule of the San Francisco 49's. There is another bay area team there as well, Oakland Raiders. You may check NFL.com for their schedules to see if they will be playing while you are there.

Finally, NFL tickets are very popular, so you may want to check into that ASAP to reserve your tickets if they are still available.

Others have answered about the quality of the teams (neither are any good), but what you really need to know is that for the San Franciso 49ers football game, it isn't as simple as "we ae going to catch a game."
While Giant tickets should be relatively easy to come by since they aren't in contention for the playoffs and Bonds has already broken the home run record, 49er tickets are not.

The wait list for tickets is many, many years long. You may find yourself purchasing tickets on the secondary market, and prices could get pretty high, so be prepared.

Also, from an aesthetics standpoint, I highly recommend going to a Giants game instead of the 49ers. The Giants play in a beatiful new ballpark in town on the bay. It is one of if not the best place in the US to watch a baseball game.

By contrast, the 49ers play in an outdated and dismal stadium a few miles away. It sits on a promentory point on the bay where the winds just don't stop. The experience isn't nearly as special.

now pending some teams do finish their regular season in October but not this year for the Giants but u can go across the bay and see the Oakland A's play. California Has A million Sports Teams so it wont be any trouble finding a game to go to

Their baseball team is no good. Last place. Although they have the all-time home run hitter now aka Barry Bonds. You might get to witness him hitting a home run as the leader. No many people can say that these days. Plus their new ball park is quite exciting from the looks of it.

As for the 49ers aka football team. They are a young an upcoming team. They might surprise some people this season. I have them finishing in 2nd place. You might fancy a go at one of their games as well.

Cheers!

baseball is over in October.
Football both the raiders and 49ers are sold out.
You would have to pay a premium to see either team.
TV is good.

They might play on October 1st but the Giants the baseball team stink. Theres one star who is hated across the world because of his steroid usage his name is Barry Bonds is the all time home run leader and might end up giving u girls a souvenir

As for the 49ers the football team their tam looks very promising this year and i'm a Patriots fan anyway they seem pretty good and they'll put on a great show

No they are almost placed last in their division....any ball game is fun though, so just go for the experience!

Football...again football is a great sport to go watch, even if the team isn't super, so please go to both, they are a blast!! Oakland is a decent team....tickets are expensive though, so book ASAP .
Look at who the Giants are playing, if they are playing the Braves, Mets, Phillies, it will be more fun because the pennant race is ON!

But keep in mind October is Play-off/World Series time, so you may miss a ball game altogether!
