I recently started getting guitar lessons. I am paying $15 for a half an hour. Well, the thing is, the guy who teaches me spends half the time writing things down that he is going to show me. He will draw out the chords and write down sentences like, "Remember to pat foot." I feel like this should be something he should have pre-printed for the lesson and should hand to me and say, "Let's do this." Also, he cut my lesson short about 5 minutes yesterday and said that was all he had. Plus he spent the first 1-2 minutes playing around on my guitar. Is this normal practice? Thanks.

the same thing just happened to me for piano lessons. $15 for half an hour and she spend 20 minutes looking for a good book to learn from. Then she drew out the scales and everything. I went to 5 lessons before I quit. I think this is a pretty common thing. I think you should shop around more to find something better.

You would be better off finding a local college student or regular person who plays that can teach you. I know that where I am from there are little fliers by the front doors of stores, or in laundromats, or in the newspaper that are just normal people offering lessons. I would look into something like that

I think you're taking this a bit too far. If he cut's your lesson 5 minutes short just once, is it going to make much of a difference? I wouldn't really mind. Anyways, him playing on your guitar for a minute or 2 is fine, my teacher does it and I think of it as inspiration(seeing him play so well!) Although my teacher doesn't write things down(he goes with the flow) your teacher should write in before-hand. I'd suggest finding a new teacher, but yours doesn't seem to bad for the price($15 isn't a lot.)

Yea, I'd find another teacher. You are absolutely right that he should be better prepped for the lesson than what you describe. As for chord diagrams, you can get books on those on your own. Find your nearest Guitar Center store and look for the songbooks. Lots of them will have chord charts.

Same name and hair!

My bf teaches guitar lessons for alot more than that but I know that he has all the things printed out and ready to go as soon as he gets there.

Bring it up with that teacher and if he cuts it 5 minutes short you shouldn't have to pay for that time.

no its not normal and you are getting ripped off! if you know any basic chords at all, you can teach yourself by just listening to music and playing along with it. the best way to learn how to play is by ear.
