I want an L-shaped banquette in my kitchen but can't find any info on how to build it. I would like to have hinges on the seat so it lifts up and I can store things underneath. I would also like to have a narrow shelf along the back to sit candles and other small decorative items. I don't know where to begin. I would appreciate advice from anyone who has done this.

Determine first obviously your measurements/fit of the piece and create a materials list.

Without knowing your thoughts of FINISH, I suggest 3/4 Ply for the basic substance. 2x2's can be your corner and leading edges support lumber. You're essentially creating two boxes, with add ons.

Test a proper, or comfortable seating height and depth for the users, and sketch it out if you have to,,,adding to that any measurements.

I'd probably stay away from hinging in this case, but I have no clue as to your notion of cushioning/etc. The TOP/Seat IF it is to be cushioned, can be the 3/4 ply, with 2x2 framing, allowing that it SITS INTO the top/open area of the Seat BOX. The seats won't move unless you pull them up.

Obviously the suggestion is MOOT if you have no cushioning in mind. In that case a heavy duty piano hinge Underneath the seat, or strap hinges hidden, will work.

This narrow shelf idea can be elevated with deco posts or simple 2x2's and definitely should be high enough and shallow enough to NOT bump heads on in seating or getting up.

Well you will just have to design it yourself ,
figure out the length you want for each bench,
the height/ depth of the seat (use a chair for these measurements)
the height/depth of the back with the shelf ( this is a personal preference but you will want the shelf to be high enough to not bother the person sitting below)
then go to your local hardware store and they will most likely help you buy the proper materials, they probably will have a computer program to refine your project as well and some places will even cut the wood to size for you !
You know that you want storage but you have to remember to leave room so you can lift up the finished seat and have it stay especially if your going to upholster it.
I would either use a simple plywood (Laminated & stained) or
MDF(painted) depending on the finish you want.
My friend and I made a L-shaped banquet seat and a tresle table and it was really simple to do, just a matter os getting you measurments right.

I am planning on building something similar. I am going to modify these plans http://www.ronhazelton.com/howto/breakfast_nook_bench.htm Something like that may work for you.
