Ether was considered a material present throughout the universe for the transportation of light. It was said to be in vacuum as well. It was Einstein Physics that said that Ether is fictitious. However in practical science, there are some situations where we consider Ether to be present.

The first six answers are related to CHEMISTRY not PHYSICS.
In physics ether was thought to be a universal substance that merely occupied space. Ether was thought to be the medium through which light and heat traveled. Deep space was considered to consist of ether.
Ether was one of the five basic elements:
Fire
Water
Air
Earth
Ether.

At the time light was discovered to be a wave, all other known wave phenomena invariably involve a medium inertia and a restoring force acting in concert to propagate the wave (such as air or a violin string). It was expected, therefore, that light propagated in some unseen material, called the ether. Michelson and Morley determined that this was not the case by proving that light traveled in at the same speed regardless of the measuring device relative motion. This is contrary to what one would expect of a static background medium in which the motion of light is constant.

'Ether' refers to a whole family of chemicals, but the most commonly known is Diethyl Ether, a solvent once used in medicine for its anaesthetic properties.
You could wet a rag with either and then have a patient breathe through it, and they'd sink into unconsciousness (though not as quickly as with chloroform).
Ether is also a recreational drug, though a lot of people make the mistake of inhaling engine starting fluid, which contains ether, but also lots of harmful stuff, like heptane. Done recreationally it causes visual & auditory hallucinations as well as a sense of surreal detachment from the world and one's rational mind.

Ether is the general name for a class of chemical compounds which contain an ether group — an oxygen atom connected to two (substituted) alkyl or aryl groups — of general formula R – O–R'.[1] A typical example is the solvent and anesthetic diethyl ether, commonly referred to simply as "ether" (ethoxyethane, CH3-CH2-O-CH2-CH3).

ether is the smallest fundamental matter of the universe
It is found even in vacuum or space
the light itself traveling in space is composed of ether
In mystical concept, the consciousness of God is present in ether. So God is everywhere.
Ether is also the reason why inter space communication is possible.
So there is no such thing as perfect void or vacuum
