I really like the way Dicken's wrote the first line of David Copperfield, which goes something like this:

"Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show..."

It's a great book with a world full of wonderful characters.

Howard Roark from the fountainhead. He lives up to his own ideals and stands for what he believes in. He doesn't let others bring him to their level. Some people find him cruel and heartless, but in order to get the message of the book across both the character and society had to be taken to the extremes that they were.

Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird--some people think he is too perfect a father, but I disagree. He struggles, but because he is so wonderfully moral, his kids learn what is right, even when the world wants them to believe in only wrong.
