There are many ways you can start a convo on the phone but Hello is usually the greetings part not exactly the conversation starter. But her are some suggestions 1.How's it going
2. how was your day
3. good morning,noon or night
3.or just the plain what are you doing and start to elaborate on what they say they are doing. then usually once you start to talk many different topics will come up from that one topic.

If it's not a business call, my brother always makes us laugh by singing a song instead of saying hello. Depending on who it is, he'll sing a song from your favorite movie to you or just something silly from a rap song like "Wipe me down!" It gets a smile from whoever is on the phone with him. If it's business it's always good to say, "good morning, good afternoon, or good evening," Sometimes people forget to say those.

greetings, salutations, good morning, good afternoon, good evening =)...Are you calling someone or answering? If I am answering, lately, I have been saying (if the number is unknown or blocked or 877 or 866 something) 'hello, who's calling?' I have been demanding in that area lately, lol! It's our phone, I have the right to ask and know. If they can't tell me, I don't have to talk, so, I hang up, lol!

well first you say hello, and then it's courteous to ask "how are you". And then just say something like "I hope I didn't interrupt anything...but I was just calling to ask:if.......". If you're calling a friend then it could be anything from asking them over, asking them something about school or something you need to know (not personal or pointed stuff), telling them you're planning something and asking them if they would join in.
