They must be very easy is all I can say, none of the people I know who have passed A levels can spell and their handwriting is abysmal.

My daughter just got four A grades in Maths, Chemistry, Biology and French and she goes to a state school. From what I've heard in the news it's actually the private sector that accounts for the improving grades and thing have been static in state schools for the past ten years. I think that my daughter has done very well indeed and know that she has worked extremely hard. State school pupils have fewer resources and so a poorer chance to succeed. Private school pupils often have supportive parents who, having forked out a lot of money, are keen to see their kids achieve. People talk about results but it really isn't a level playing field out there. When the results of state school match the results of fee-paying schools, then we can say that we truly have a nation of super intelligent human beings. As it is, its is a case of the haves and the have-nots with the haves doing well and the have nots struggling. The exams my daughter took were demanding and have guaranteed her entry to medical school. For the sake of her future patients I hope that she IS super intelligent and it's not some government conspiracy that gave her the results!!

I know a few people in the teaching profession, from teachers of Infants right the way through to University professors. They all agree that A levels are significantly easier now than they were 10 or 15 years ago. There's a definite 'dumbing down' of standards.
I manage 20 members of staff, all but one are graduates and i can honestly say that some of them can't string a coherent sentence together let alone write a letter. Their spelling is sometimes infantile and interpersonal skills are bordering on the sociopathic....getting to University and being awarded a degree these days is like falling off a log.

I think its because the exams are getting easier. For example I was in a shop the other day and the girl keyed in the wrong amount of money that I had given her then she looked all confused and couldn't work out how much change she had to give me. In the end I just told her, but its amazing just how many youngsters can't work out the simplest sums unless they have a calculator etc

No, the government assures us that the exams are not getting easier, so all those teenagers must have genius level IQs! After all, the government would not lie to us, would it?

If exam results were going down, it would be a complete different story. People would say we were getting thicker! People who are getting there results have worked hard for 2 years for them and obviously want to make something of themselves, unlike the people who are sitting on their bums everyday sponging of our taxes.
