California has the most reservations than any other state in the U.S. Geographic terrain of California ranges from low dry desserts to the giant redwood forests, a wonderful central and northern coastline, Yosemite, lots more.
I agree with Mr. TwoCrows, write about the California indigenous But keep it realistic.
Tony Hillerman has covered the Southwest. Robert Connely Jr., (Cherokee), has covered the Oklahoma thing. Go for California.
By the way, the original territory of the Caddo Nation, was Texas, also Louisiana, besides Oklahoma & southwest Arkansas. If fact Texas came from the Caddo word “Te-hass,” which in turn was translated by the Spanish, “Tejas.” Good luck with your project, and see if the University of Okalahoma Press, will publish your novella.

The question should be what states DON'T we live in. We are spread throughout the United States. We live everywhere from reservation to big cities. YOU could have passed one of us on the sidewalk today and not even known it....
The Eastern Band of Cherokee live in the mountains of North Carolina, the Apache and Navajo live in the mountains of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. The Mohawks live in the mountains of the north eastern states as well as a large group in the NYC area. It would be hard to find a state that doesn't have some Native Americans living in it.
Good luck on your novel, just remember not to stereotype us as so many people do......

I don't think there's been a book about California Indians since ISHI. But then we're not as romanticized as them plains indians. We have EVERY kind of surroundings here from snow and ice to deserts. Mountains to beaches.
Over 300 tribes in California to choose from.

alaska...there are several indiginous groups in this state that live in the mountains; there are tlingits (northern and southern), timpshian (they live in a community called metlakata), haida (they live on prince of wales island ), the ahtna athabascan people of south central alaska (the people along the copper river), and there are the other 11 athabascan alaska based groups too. i don't know about the other regions of alaska where there are other indignous groups from what i've gathered from photos those regions look kinda of tundra like flat lands.

i admire American Indian myself and that's what I call myself. in case you're from India and you're actually an American citizen, you're Indian American. in case you're a close-by, you're an American Indian. it is not likely all that perplexing. individually i think of that folk who get disenchanted by potential of the term "American Indian" or "nearby American" are slightly too gentle approximately issues. Why concentration on something like that rather of poverty and crime and the corruption of the BIA and the withholding of royalties by potential of the yank government to tribes?

Natives are everywhere in this country. I used to joke with my cousins and others that I met in boarding school in Santa Fe,NM that at one point in their lives at least 50% of the Native in the USA will end up in somewhere in New Mexico and Arizona for at least a solid month or two. I have nothing to back that up .

every state. there are over 500 tribes in the United states. depends what state you have your eye on. I would honestly write about tribes you dont hear about every day. that means no lakota, navajo, apache, hochunk oneida, cree, dakota, nakota, blackfoot, black feet, hopi and any other tribes you hear about all the time.
