I am wondering if any of you at your 20 week scan were told you had a low lying placenta and did this eventuall move up. I was told yesterday not to be concerned cos it will more than likely move up but was just wondering anyone with experience of this can shed some light

I would not worry too much as this is not a more serious condition like placenta previa. My friend was diagnosed with a condition like yours and they just said the placenta was positioned low but not covering the opening to her cervix.

Hers moved up a little bit as the pregnancy progressed and did not cause any labor complications

Funny enough I am now 27w 3d pregnant. I just went for a sonogram yesterday because I had low lying placenta my entire pregnancy. It moved on it's own and I now hoave no worries. You should have to go again in 8 weeks and I am sure you will be fine! Just remember.... if you start bleeding at all...even a little...call your doctor immediately. This is only because your placenta is right near the cervix and you don't want to lose any placenta.

Low lying placenta is not placenta previa - it has to be physically covering the cervical os (opening) for it to be called previa.

If it's low lying, it's just that, low in the uterus, but not covering the cervical os. And it is true, that in many cases, the placenta will migrate upwards as the uterus expands and grows further along in pregnancy. Even if it doesn't move up much, it almost never migrates downward over the cervix if it wasn't covering it previously.
