Scarlet is deep red
Mauve is pale purple
You often find stuffed toys that are mauve. Not many natural things, apart from flowers, are mauve. It's the kind of colour that's often used for baby clothes and the like.

I know that there are colours which have simple names like red, yellow, blue etc.
But I hate it when people use really exotic names for colours like mauve and electric blue.
I did an art course and when had to use the British standard names for colours, after all, if you go into a paint shop and buy a tin of red paint and then go back in a years time that tin of red paint may well be a different colour!!!
So it makes sense to describe the colour with a standard appelation.

Scarlet is firmly, brightly in the family of "red." Think of lipstick, or a child's crayon.
Mauve leans from "red" toward "purple," but also with grayish tones, and it can be pale or dark. Think of fabric in particular.
